On the car, this can mean a VIN plate or label has been removed, a stamped number has been obliterated, or an identifier remains but shows alteration or tampering. Official verification treats Missing and Altered/Tampered as separate findings. CARS4.BID’s Damage code does not identify which VIN location is affected.
No. CARS4.BID Terms require every vehicle leaving a Copart facility to be towed or transported, regardless of Condition. Run and drive does not create an exception. You can arrange pickup yourself or ask CARS4.BID to arrange transport through a third-party provider. Plan this before bidding so the delivery cost is included in your project budget.
Non repairable adds a separate document barrier. On CARS4.BID, it can include bill of sale, junk, scrap, or similar paperwork that may restrict registration. Resolving the VIN issue does not by itself remove those document restrictions. Verify the exact document and destination-state rules before bidding.
Cars in the Missing/altered VIN category are listed with a VIN reported as altered or removed, so the vehicle’s history cannot be accurately represented. That issue can appear on a lot that otherwise looks like an ordinary repair project, including listings marked Run and drive or showing an actual odometer reading. When a Missing/altered VIN car can make sense to buy
A car with a missing or altered VIN has an identity problem that body or mechanical repair alone does not resolve. Federal law generally prohibits knowingly altering or removing an identification number, while allowing limited exceptions, including restoration or replacement performed in accordance with applicable state law.
That makes intended use the first criterion. For a road-use rebuild, keep the lot only if its ownership document and the registration rules in your state leave a plausible path to establish identity and registration. For a donor, dismantling, or scrap project, road registration may not be the goal, but the VIN issue and any ownership-document requirements still need checking under the rules for that use.

What photos can and cannot tell you about a Missing/altered VIN lot
The Missing/altered VIN Damage value tells you a VIN was reported altered or removed. It does not identify the affected VIN marking, and photos may not show every identifier. Use the gallery to separate what is visible from what remains Unknown.
Look for:
- Windshield-readable VIN — for passenger cars, federal rules require the VIN to be readable through the glazing near the left windshield pillar. Check whether that area is shown and the number is legible.
- Manufacturer certification label — on cars covered by the applicable federal certification rule, this label contains the VIN. Required locations begin around the driver-side door opening. If those are impracticable, the label may be placed on the left instrument panel, then on the inward-facing driver-side door if needed. Compare it only if visible. Do not assume an unphotographed alternate identifier exists.
Matching readable VINs can support consistency between visible identifiers, but photos alone do not authenticate the vehicle’s identity. If the relevant area is not photographed or the VIN is unreadable, the result remains Unknown. If visible identifiers conflict, do not treat the issue as cosmetic or paperwork-only. Keep the identity question open for formal verification rather than guessing from the Damage label.
What to verify before buying one to put back on the road
Before treating a Missing/altered VIN lot as a road-use candidate, verify its ownership document and the vehicle-identification process required by your registration state. Neither an identifier shown in the listing nor a history report replaces those checks.
- Open the lot’s Title after login. Do not infer it from the H1, URL, Document type, or narrative copy.
- Open VIN.DOCTOR and review records for chronology or conflicts. History adds context without independently identifying the physical car.
- Check the destination state’s vehicle-identification procedure. Ask what process applies to this document and reported identity issue, what ownership evidence is required, and whether assignment or reassignment applies.
- Separate pre-bid facts from post-purchase inspection issues. For Texas assignment or reassignment, TxDMV requires law-enforcement inspection and sufficient ownership evidence. If the inspector cannot determine year and make on a manufactured vehicle, TxDMV cannot issue a number or title it. California requires CHP verification when identity cannot be confirmed, public and alternate VINs conflict, or either identifier was altered or tampered with.
If a visible area could clarify the case, ask a CARS4.BID manager whether an independent inspection can document it. Mark the lot PASS when the document and process are understood and nothing critical remains unresolved before bidding. Use CONDITIONAL when the result depends on post-purchase authorized inspection, HOLD when key facts are unknown, and REJECT for road use when official requirements make that goal unacceptable.
Compare Missing/altered VIN cars by what still has to be proven
After a car with a missing or altered VIN clears the VIN/document check, compare only candidates that remain viable for road use. Their order should reflect what remains unresolved about identity and repair scope, rather than which car simply looks cleaner or starts and drives.

Only after two cars have the same road-use status should Condition, Odometer, Has key, Primary damage, Secondary damage, and photos change their order. Run and drive adds limited evidence of observed operability, and an Odometer reading marked actual adds mileage context. Neither resolves weaker identity evidence. Lot-page guidance does not make Primary damage automatically more significant than Secondary damage.
For a Missing/altered VIN car that has already passed the identity check, the better buy is the one whose remaining physical work is better defined by the available damage and operability evidence, with fewer decision-critical Unknowns. Move only those finalists to cost analysis.
