What each Burn label tells you
Across CARS4.BID listings, the Damage field can show five fire-related Burn classifications:
- Burn — indicates fire damage affecting most or all of the vehicle rather than only the engine or interior. It does not identify every affected component.
- Burn - engine — indicates fire damage involving the engine area, including possible electrical or mechanical components. The label does not identify every affected part.
- Burn - exterior — identifies exterior fire involvement. The label itself does not identify which exterior components were affected.
- Burn - interior — indicates that part of the interior was damaged by fire; this can include the trunk. The label does not define how much was affected.
- Burn - total — is a separate Damage value shown on CARS4.BID. The label does not itemize affected parts or establish repairability.
These labels describe reported fire damage, not a severity or cost scale. If Burn appears as Secondary damage, it is another Damage entry, not a lower-priority score. Copart and IAAI use different fire-damage wording, so read the Damage entry shown for each CARS4.BID lot rather than treating labels as interchangeable.
Match the fire-damaged car to the project
Before deeper review, decide whether you plan to rebuild the vehicle, use it as a parts donor, or buy it for a component. Each goal depends on different parts of the car, so the same Burn classification can lead to a different screening decision.

When buying a fire damaged car, use the project goal to decide what must be confirmed before bidding. If the Burn classification directly names a part or area your project depends on, do not assume it remains usable. If the label does not name that area, that still does not confirm its condition. Keep the lot under consideration only if you can confirm enough about the parts your project depends on; otherwise, verify the critical component before moving forward.
Check how far the fire damage is actually documented
Auction photos of fire-damaged cars may show the burned area clearly while leaving the transition to adjacent parts undocumented. A missing angle cannot prove that the next area is undamaged. Before keeping a lot for deeper review, use the photo sequence to determine how far the visible fire damage is actually documented.
- Find the last clearly affected area. Look for visible signs such as charring, melted trim, soot, or heat discoloration, and note where those signs end in the available images.
- Check the neighboring area. Follow the same panel edge, opening, floor section, or nearby surface across the next photos. Look for an image that actually shows the transition from visibly affected material to the adjacent section.
- Treat an unshown area as Unknown. If the photo set stops before that transition appears, do not conclude that the fire damage is localized. The photographs simply do not establish where the visible effects end.
Auction photos can help define the visible fire-damage boundary, but they cannot establish fire origin, temperature, duration, hidden electrical or mechanical condition, structural strength, or repair cost. If the boundary is not documented clearly enough to support your decision, the lot needs additional verification before bidding.
Verify the high-voltage system in an electric fire-damaged car
On a CARS4.BID lot page, Fuel: Electric or Fuel: Hybrid identifies the reported propulsion/fuel type, but the standard public fields do not separately report traction-battery condition. Has engine Yes, Engine type, Drivetrain, and Condition do not answer that question. A Burn EV can therefore have its propulsion type and other key lot fields filled in while the high-voltage battery remains Unknown.
That missing battery information matters because an electric propulsion system includes several separate components. The traction battery stores energy for the motor, power electronics control how that energy is delivered, the thermal system manages operating temperature, and the onboard charger supports battery charging. For an electric fire-damaged car, each system that matters to the purchase needs its own supporting evidence; information about one does not confirm the condition of the others.
A hybrid adds another layer because it also has an internal-combustion engine. An engine-related field may therefore describe only one part of the propulsion system. Do not treat Has engine Yes or Run and drive as confirmation of the battery, charging system, or high-voltage components. If the lot’s value depends on those systems, treat their condition as Unknown until the listing or additional verification confirms otherwise.
How prices are formed for fire damaged cars
The value of a Burn lot depends on what remains usable after the fire, not simply on model year or original retail price. A newer premium car can still justify a low maximum bid when confirmed fire damage reaches expensive electronics, the engine area, or the high-voltage system, or when those systems remain unresolved. An older car may support a stronger bid when the parts needed for the project are better documented and fewer costly Unknowns remain.
When comparing fire-damaged cars at auction, match more than make and year. Burn classification, Condition, Document/Title context, and the status of project-critical systems can move otherwise similar cars into different value ranges. Current bid and Buy it now price are different auction signals, and neither establishes the final project cost; extra Unknowns can erase an apparent price advantage.
When buying a fire damaged car, set your maximum bid from the project economics:
- Start with realistic post-project value, or the recoverable value of the parts if the car is a donor.
- Subtract repair or replacement costs you can already price with reasonable confidence.
- Subtract applicable auction-related fees and estimated delivery.
- Leave a reserve for fire-related systems or areas whose condition is still Unknown.
