No. An OBD-II DTC identifies a detected condition in a monitored component or system. It does not by itself prove which part failed. OEM procedures may require further tests before replacement, so use the code to choose the next diagnostic step.
Mechanical does not determine registration eligibility. The exact Title and destination-state rules do. CARS4.BID warns that title classification can change after purchase, so verify the lot’s Title with the destination DMV before bidding, especially for Non repairable or Other documents.
Not necessarily. Federal law requires a no-charge remedy when the vehicle was no more than 15 years old when the defect or noncompliance was determined, although manufacturers may cover older vehicles. Confirm the VIN-specific campaign before counting its remedy toward the current Mechanical repair.
A mechanically totaled car can look complete in photos while the listing still leaves the actual mechanical work unclear. What Mechanical actually means on this page
A car with mechanical damage appears on this page because Mechanical is included in the lot’s reported Damage data. Mechanical is a damage classification. It does not function as a sale or vehicle-condition status. It tells you that a mechanical problem was reported, but it does not name the failed part or the repair needed. The damage-code guidance says Mechanical can include engine or transmission damage, while the Damage filter also lists Engine and Transmission as separate values. Neither system should be assigned automatically from that label alone.
A lot may still show Engine type, Transmission, Drivetrain, Fuel, Cylinders, or Has engine. Those fields describe the vehicle’s configuration or component presence. They do not tell you which part is faulty.
Treat the exact fault as Unknown until another fact points to a specific system. If Mechanical is the only fault-specific information, stop there. Do not turn a broad damage classification into an engine, transmission, or other component diagnosis.
Why a Mechanical lot can still have a Clean title
A mechanically totaled car can have a Clean title because Mechanical describes reported damage, while title branding is handled separately under state titling rules. Clean and Salvage are Document type values, so they answer a different question from the reported Mechanical damage.
A reported mechanical problem does not by itself create a Salvage title. State titling rules determine when a vehicle receives a salvage or other brand, and those rules differ across the U.S. The Department of Justice notes that the same damaged vehicle can meet a salvage threshold in one state and not in another.
For this category, read Clean narrowly. The lot is currently presented in the Clean document category. That does not establish whether the reported problem is minor or inexpensive to repair. Check the actual Title together with VIN.DOCTOR history. If earlier salvage, total-loss, or title records appear, establish the chronology before treating Clean as a positive signal. A favorable current document should not replace a separate check of the reported fault.
What Run and drive rules out on a mechanically totaled car
For a Mechanical lot, Run and drive rules out only conditions that would have made the auction movement impossible. At that check, it rules out:
- a complete no-start condition;
- on a conventional combustion-engine car, a completely seized engine;
- loss of propulsion severe enough to prevent about three feet of self-powered movement.
When comparing cars with mechanical problems for sale, the remaining risk extends well beyond that brief check. A three-foot yard movement does not test behavior after warm-up, under sustained load, at road speed, through repeated shifts, or over a longer drive. The vehicle can still have intermittent stalling, overheating, transmission shudder or slipping, delayed engagement, or driveline problems that appear only under those conditions. OEM procedures show why this matters: some transmission shudder faults require road speed, light throttle, and a defined operating temperature to reproduce.
Use Run and drive only to remove failures that conflict with the movement actually observed. Engine start narrows less because it confirms starting and idling. It does not confirm movement. Won’t start identifies no failed system because the CARS4.BID definition also allows that the vehicle was not tested.
Use Front end photos to assess a mechanically totaled car
Mechanical and Front end can appear on the same lot without proving the collision caused the Mechanical problem. Use photos to look for a physical path from the impact to a mechanical system.
- Wheel or corner hit. Compare front wheels. A wheel sitting farther back, tilted, or off-center justifies checking steering, suspension, hub, and drive components.
- Center-front crush. Displaced radiator, condenser, fan, or front-bulkhead parts show the impact reached cooling hardware. They do not establish engine damage.
- Lower-front impact. Visible subframe, crossmember, shield, or mount-area deformation justifies checking powertrain-support components.
- Fluid path. Visible wetness below damaged cooling or oil-line areas can point to a breached fluid circuit, but photos cannot identify the failed part.
- Airbag or steering clue. Deployed front airbags or a deformed steering wheel may trigger model-specific steering requirements. FCA warns steering-column damage may be internal after specified collisions.
For a Mechanical project, use these clues to decide what needs verification. If an angle is missing, ask a CARS4.BID manager whether an independent inspection can capture it in a photo/video report. Until a connecting fact appears, keep Front end and Mechanical separate.
Read auction history before judging a mechanically totaled car
Auction history can show whether a Mechanical car was simply relisted or later appeared under a new auction record. VIN.DOCTOR can include auction listings, damage photos, and odometer records, so compare the sequence rather than the record count.

For a mechanically totaled car, chronology matters when it shows what changed and what did not. Treat only documented changes as evidence. How to set a maximum bid on a mechanically totaled car
For a Mechanical lot, set your maximum bid so the project still works if a costlier repair that remains possible turns out to be necessary. Budgeting only the cheaper branch understates the project risk.
Build the number backward:
- Set a project ceiling from comparable running-market vehicles with similar year, model, mileage, and powertrain.
- Subtract auction fees, delivery, and other acquisition costs.
- Subtract known non-mechanical work.
- Reserve money for the best-supported repair scenario, diagnostic work while the fault remains unresolved, and a costlier scenario that has not been ruled out.
- What remains is your personal maximum bid.
Historical Copart results show why a single average Mechanical price is a weak bidding benchmark. A 2021 Nissan Altima with Mechanical and Front end damage sold for $3,550, a 2020 Toyota Camry SE with Mechanical and Front end damage reached a $4,050 final bid, while a 2022 Ford F-150 reported with Mechanical damage sold for $11,600.
