When I first started flipping cars, I kept hearing the same advice: “Get a dealer license, buy from Manheim, and list your cars on CarGurus or AutoTrader.”
So, I went legit, got my dealer license, started buying from Manheim, and listed my inventory on AutoTrader… only to end up with zero sales.
What those so-called gurus don’t tell you is that buying from Manheim is only a small part of the process. To really compete, you need a well-established dealership with a service center, an attractive showroom, and in-house financing options. Without those, you’re going to have a tough time competing with the big players.
Take a look at the photo of a 15-year-old Toyota Camry for sale. Ask yourself: Would you rather buy it from someone with a shady office and no service center or from an established dealership that offers financing, service, and even free coffee?
When you list on platforms like CarGurus or AutoTrader, you’re competing against “big whale” dealerships that can outshine you on price, terms, and financing rates.
