How to Buy Back a Crashed $6 Million Bugatti From Copart

Hey guys! It’s no secret that many car owners want to buy their car back from Copart or IAAI after an accident and an insurance payout. Our customers ask us about this all the time and want to know how it works. Usually, it is a pretty simple process. But today’s story is anything but simple. Let’s go!
What do you do after crashing not just any car, but a Bugatti worth several million dollars? Most people would take the insurance payout and never look at the wreck again. Alex Gonzalez did the opposite.

The car was his Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport, one of only 60 ever made. After the crash, the insurance company declared it a total loss and sent it to Copart. But when the Bugatti came up for auction, Alex decided he wanted his car back. His final bid was $1,655,000, and the total came close to $1.9 million after fees.

Getting the car back was the easy part. Fixing it was another story. An official Bugatti repair was reportedly estimated at around $1.7 million, so Alex called YouTuber Mat Armstrong, famous for rebuilding wrecked supercars. Their plan was simple: rebuild the Chiron themselves and save a huge amount on the repair.

Then they hit a wall. The car’s VIN had reportedly been blocked in Bugatti’s system, making it difficult to order factory parts. Instead of giving up, the team started taking the Chiron apart and searching for other ways to get what they needed. Along the way, they discovered something the internet loved: some small components inside the multi-million-dollar Bugatti could also be found in much cheaper Volkswagen Group cars, including Audi models.
The fight over the rebuild eventually became big enough to reach Bugatti’s top management. Bugatti said that repairing a carbon-fiber hypercar capable of more than 200 mph is a serious safety issue, while Alex and Mat wanted a chance to prove the totaled car could be saved.
This crazy story lasted for months. A Bugatti that the insurance company considered finished was being brought back piece by piece. Alex had already spent nearly $2 million just to get his wrecked car back, and Mat Armstrong worked hard to get it back on the road.
In the end, they reached a deal with Bugatti. Bugatti agreed to sell them the parts they needed, and the two sides that had been fighting ended up calling each other friends.
A car that went from a multi-million-dollar hypercar to a wreck at Copart got a second life. A crazy story with a happy ending. Was all of this really about the car, or was it also about hype and views? Probably no one will ever tell the full truth.
But the point of the story is simple: if your car was totaled by the insurance company and you love it and want it back, you may still have a chance to buy it back at auction and bring it back to life!
