A lot of cars sold at Copart are missing catalytic converters! 99% of these cars sold by car dealers and not insurance companies.
At CARS4.BID, we offer an extremely useful feature that displays the seller of the car. If you notice that the seller is a dealer, consider it a warning sign, especially in many cases involving missing catalytic converters.

We often receive claims from our customers stating that the catalytic converter is missing, often attributing it to a driver who may have stolen it while moving the vehicle. However, upon checking the car description of their purchase, we frequently find that it was sold by a dealer. Despite our efforts to explain the situation, they continue to request refunds for transportation.
That’s why we always instruct our drivers to check for the catalytic converter at the auction. As you see catalytic converter was already missing at the auction at the time of pick up.
Purpose of catalytic converter
The catalytic converter, a crucial emission-control device in vehicles, plays a significant role in reducing harmful pollutants emitted from the exhaust system. It converts harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons into less harmful substances like carbon dioxide and water vapor. Due to its valuable metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium, catalytic converters are often targeted by thieves who sell them to scrap yards for a hefty profit.
Cost to replace
The cost to replace a stolen catalytic converter can vary depending on the make and model of the vehicle, but it typically ranges from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars. Not only does the theft of catalytic converters result in financial losses for vehicle owners, but it also leads to environmental harm due to increased emissions from vehicles without functioning catalytic converters.
Who to blame?!
Blaming Copart for such issues isn’t logical. Copart serves solely as an auto auction platform, facilitating the sale of cars from various sources such as the public, insurance companies, and dealers. Because they don’t inspect the mechanical components of vehicles, they cannot provide guarantees regarding their condition.
However, it’s important to note that returning the car back to the auction or CARS4.BID is not an option. Auto auction does not guarantee catalytic converters, and this is explicitly stated in their terms and conditions. Please remember that salvage auto auctions sell cars AS IS WHERE IS, without any warranty.
