TL/DR
When it comes to purchasing vehicles, particularly at salvage auto auctions, it’s crucial to be aware of the nuances surrounding titles. One of the common issues that buyers encounter is dealing with a Canadian title while the vehicle is located in the USA. These cars are for Canadian dealers only, everybody else will be denied to purchase.
Can you buy it?
I received two questions last week about this topic. One came from my dealer friend, who texted me about an issue he was having. He couldn’t buy a car for his customer, so he wanted to see if CARS4.BID could purchase the car for him.

Who can buy it?
To make a long story short, these cars are only available for Canadian dealers. Even exporters can’t buy them because they won’t be able to export them. Canadian dealers can buy them and import them back to Canada.
These cars are often found in warm states in the USA during winter, such as Florida and Arizona. “Snowbirds” move to these warm states and bring their vehicles with Canadian titles. Sometimes accidents happen, and insurance companies choose not to transport the cars back to Canada. Instead, they sell them at local salvage auto auctions.
Do not buy Canadian title in the USA
Previously, these cars were open for bidding to everyone. I once bought such a car in Arizona with a Canadian title. Later, I discovered it was impossible to export the car. I couldn’t even register it in the USA due to international title restrictions. I wasted a lot of time, money, and effort on the car, only to eventually sell it for parts. The cost of this mistake was very expensive. I complained to salvage auto auctions, and I’m glad they implemented a feature preventing bidding on these cars.
Many salvage auto auctions now disable the buying options for vehicles with Canadian titles for local buyers in the USA. This limitation is primarily due to potential registration complications and associated risks.

What is a Canadian Title?
A Canadian title is a legal document that establishes ownership of a vehicle in Canada. It contains essential information about the vehicle, such as the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), make, model, and owner’s details. Just like in the USA, vehicles in Canada require a title to prove ownership and facilitate registration and sale transactions.
Registration Restrictions
One of the significant challenges of having a Canadian title in the USA is the potential registration restrictions. Each state has its own Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) regulations, and some may have specific requirements or restrictions for vehicles with foreign titles. This can complicate the registration process and make it challenging to transfer ownership of the vehicle.
Export Limitations
Often, vehicles with Canadian titles cannot be exported out of the USA. This restriction is a crucial consideration for exporters and dealers who might be interested in purchasing these vehicles for resale outside of the USA.
Overview
While purchasing a vehicle with a Canadian title in the USA can present challenges, being aware of the potential issues and knowing how to navigate them can help you make informed decisions and avoid complications. Always conduct thorough research, consult with local authorities, and be prepared to address the registration and export challenges associated with Canadian titles to ensure a hassle-free buying experience.
